The Hallberg Rassy 36 is a small and manageable sailboat, yet large enough to go anywhere, at any time. Designed and built to combine the latest technologies with traditional standards, it offers comfort and pleasing lines as expected from a Hallberg Rassy.

The Hallberg Rassy 36 Designed by Germán Frers

The Hallberg Rassy 36 marks a new era for the Swedish shipyard, as it begins the collaboration with Germán Frers. Produced from 1989 to 2003, a total of 602 hulls were built during this period, divided into Mark I and II models.

Hulls from number 1 to 256, produced from 1989 to 1994, were the Mark I model, while the subsequent ones from number 257 to 602, produced from 1994 to 2003, were the Mark II.

The latter differs from the Mk I as it has a 30 cm wider transom and an integrated swimming platform. At the same time, the aft locker has been improved. The deck is also wider and higher, which has allowed for more space inside the aft cabin. Although the hull length has increased by 44 cm on the Mk II, the maximum waterline length has been increased by 67 cm. The deck lengths have remained unchanged.

The mast, keel, rudder, and underwater line, as well as the engine configuration, remain the same between Mk I and Mk II. With the Mk II version, an already good boat has become even better and more contemporary.

The Hull

The hull is made with isophthalic polyester resin and gelcoat. The gelcoat color is 1000. The 3400 kg lead keel is secured with 17 stainless steel bolts of Ø 20 mm.
The rudder shaft has a diameter of 50 mm with roller bearings.
The blue stripe on the hull sides without portholes is a characteristic of Frers’ designs.

The Deck Plan

The deck, aft swimming platform, and cockpit seats are all in 12 mm teak. The handrails and all woodwork on deck are also in fine teak. At the bow, there’s a 21 kg CQR anchor. The bow locker can accommodate up to 60 meters of chain, which is automatically stowed thanks to the windlass. On one side of the cockpit is a locker to store 2 gas bottles of 6 kg each. In the cockpit, there’s also a huge locker on the starboard side where even bicycles can be stowed. The windscreen is made of tempered glass and opens in the middle to allow good air circulation in warmer climates.

Rigging and Sails

The mast, boom, and running rigging are by Seldén. The mast is deck-stepped, above a reinforced bulkhead. The standard sails are by Elvström Sails, and the boom has a pulley system for two reefing points. There are versions with in-mast furling mainsails: for a boat of this size, it’s unnecessary and could only create problems if you need to reduce sail quickly. In this case, you can say that the rule applies: fewer (unnecessary) things on board, fewer things that can break.

Performance

The Hallberg Rassy 36 is a blue water cruising sloop with classic lines, solid, livable, and with high-quality finishes. The significant displacement of 7,500 kilos is associated with proportionate sail area, but performance suffers in the light breezes typically found in the Mediterranean during summer. On the other hand, it’s a boat capable of handling any navigation in windy and almost always rough seas, sailing softly on the waves, stable and secure. To give its best, this 36-footer needs true winds from 13 knots and up.

The Stability Curve

With standard 1.70 m keel

With deep 1.95 m keel

Engine, Heating, Fuel, and Water

The Hallberg Rassy 36 is powered by a Volvo Penta D2-55, a 4-cylinder diesel engine, 2.2-liter displacement, 41 kW / 55 HP output, mounted on flexible rubber supports with a water-cooled and silenced rubber exhaust pipe. It’s important to check this pipe as it could break over time and damage the engine. The engine is freshwater cooled. The boat comes standard with a fixed 3-blade propeller. The engine hour meter is mounted in the cockpit. For fuel storage, there are two stainless steel tanks with a total capacity of 335 liters.

Indicatively, the fuel consumption during cruising is 4 liters / hour (about 520 nautical miles).

The water tanks hold a total of 310 liters. The pressure system provides water flow to the bathrooms and kitchen. The (insulated) hot water tank with 230 V boiler keeps water hot for at least 24 hours.

Heating is provided by the thermostatically controlled Webasto Airtop 3500 Diesel. Air vents are present in the forward cabin, bathroom, saloon, and aft cabin. This can be controlled separately in the forward and aft cabins.

All filters in the engine room are easily accessible. The engine room is soundproofed and has a very low bilge pump.

The Interiors

The interior layout of the boat doesn’t differ much from the models that preceded it. A large master cabin aft, with a double bed on the right and a single on the left. Just as you enter the boat, there’s a large chart table on the left and an L-shaped galley on the right. In the center of the saloon, slightly to the left, is a large table with folding leaves, to its left an L-shaped sofa, and on the right a three-seater sofa. The height in the saloon reaches 1.91 meters. Forward is a spacious bathroom and a V-shaped cabin. The interior workmanship is very well-crafted and the chosen mahogany is worked with extreme care.
The engine compartment is particularly spacious, a common feature of all models from this shipyard.
The hull is insulated against heat and cold.

Personal Considerations

For the Hallberg Rassy 36 Mk I model from ’90 or ’91, I found offers around 75,000-90,000 Euros (August 2017). You can probably negotiate the price down further.
Often the owners of these boats didn’t skimp on maintenance, so you can find vessels with replaced engines or other major work already completed. It’s not the fastest boat, but it’s certainly sturdy and comfortable for sailing solo or as a couple with occasional guests aboard. The fact that it has only one head doesn’t make it ideal for chartering, but this isn’t necessarily a limitation for hosting people on board. This boat has a teak deck, so when purchasing it’s important to carefully check the condition of the teak and determine if there are any leaks. This is a fairly common problem with this boat. Having to redo the teak can become a very expensive operation and is a point not to be underestimated.

In the previous three articles, we looked at several areas where we can save money. While these amounts might seem small individually, when viewed together over 10 or 15 years, you can achieve significant results! Let’s make a savings forecast…

Let’s hypothetically assume we can deposit CHF 300 monthly into a savings account and earn CHF 2,000 annually from a side activity. Sure, these are modest figures, but it’s better to make a “conservative” estimate rather than exaggerate and later realize we’re not reaching our goal.

Let’s take the savings calculated previously and look at the forecast over 10 and 15 years:

Year

10 years

15 years

TV and Internet Subscription

CHF 888.-

CHF 8,880.-

CHF 13,320.-

Mobile Phone

CHF 1,188.-

CHF 11,880.-

CHF 31,140.-

Various Membership Fees

CHF 300.-

CHF 3,000.-

CHF 4,500.-

Cigarettes

CHF 2,920.-

CHF 29,200.-

CHF 43,800.-

Savings Account

CHF 3,600.-

CHF 36,000.-

CHF 54,000.-

Comprehensive Insurance Savings

CHF 600.-

CHF 6,000.-

CHF 9,000.-

Leasing Savings

CHF 3,960.-

CHF 39,600.-

CHF 59,400.-

Side Activity

CHF 2,000.-

CHF 20,000.-

CHF 30,000.-

TOTAL

CHF 15,456.-

CHF 154,560.-

CHF 231,840.-

Clearly, with these figures we’ll have to settle for a modest boat, but if we look at the 10-year savings, we could get a boat around CHF 60,000, fix it up with another CHF 15,000, and travel for 3 years – not bad, right?

Or alternatively, we could settle for a boat around CHF 40,000, do a refit with CHF 10,000, and use the remaining CHF 100,000 to travel for 4 years.

A side activity, in addition to regular work, allows us to increase revenue and more easily reach our goals. If this activity can also be carried out during our cruise, it will provide greater financial security and more flexibility in managing expenses.

Thanks to my great passion for sailing and the contacts I’ve made with some operators, I started a side business organizing cruises and sailing courses through my portal www.free-time-activities.com.
In addition to sea activities, I also handle the sale of nautical clothing and accessories, helping new boat owners outfit their boats. These activities allow me to increase my monthly income.

This portal also serves another purpose: to make myself known so that when I set off, I can promote my project. My budget won’t allow me to buy a new boat, but the idea is to get one (like the <g id="gid_0">Moody 376</g>) with nice, comfortable, and spacious cabins to host one or two couples on board. I don’t want it to become a business, as I still want to enjoy this life on the boat without too many people on board, but hosting a couple on board for one week a month would mean having an income of about 1,000 Euros, halving <g id="gid_1">the estimated monthly expenses</g>. If I manage to take two couples on board in one week, the monthly expenses would be fully covered.

Eliminating debt before departure is a very important aspect for living our long journey peacefully and without worries.

We live in a society where people are increasingly in debt: if once there was mainly just the mortgage, today there’s car leasing, installments for the television, installments for the microwave and for every smallest and most trivial thing. Personally I don’t like having debts, in fact the only one I have at the moment is the car lease. In less than a year the contract will end and I’ll have to evaluate what to do.

On one hand, leasing allows you to always have a new car and this avoids having repair costs and various surprises that you would have with an older used car. It’s true though that at the end of the contract I’ll still have to put a certain initial sum on the table to get a new car on lease, I would always have the monthly payment to make (currently CHF 330/month) and I would have to continue paying comprehensive insurance mandatorily (currently CHF 1,350/year). And this just for a car that I use to make at most 12 Locarno-Menton trips per year (when I go sailing) and some small evening trips around Locarno.

Buying a good used car, or taking over the current leased car (in this case I would also know that it’s in excellent condition), would allow me to:

eliminate comprehensive insurance, probably lowering car insurance by CHF 600

eliminate monthly lease payments (CHF 330 x 12 = CHF 3,960)

Overall I could save CHF 4,560 per year and would no longer have debts.

Another very common debt is the mortgage on the house. A few years ago I was looking to buy an apartment, but then I didn’t conclude anything.
For those who have this debt, there are two paths to take: if you intend to take only a few sabbatical years, the option of renting out the house during your absence is probably the most sensible one. You would have a monthly income and upon return there would still be the house. Clearly this option implies a certain financial responsibility, because non-payment of rent can become a problem.

The other possibility is to sell the house, thus extinguishing the debt and also getting something for the cruise.

A long sailing trip requires a certain amount of financial liquidity: for this reason, it’s necessary to plan and set up a savings plan.

Many people think that to undertake such a project, you need to be wealthy, but that’s not necessarily the case. It’s more important to know how to save, and there are many ways to do so, here are a few:

opening a savings account

life insurance (third pillar)

purchasing stocks and funds

changing lifestyle, avoiding unnecessary expenses

The savings account: is the first place people think of depositing their savings. Unfortunately, the interest these accounts yield nowadays is really negligible, we’re talking about 0.15% or less. However, it’s still worth setting a monthly amount (according to one’s possibilities) which will be automatically transferred from the checking account to the savings account.

Life insurance (third pillar): is another interesting and fairly safe savings method, allowing you to pay a set monthly amount agreed with the insurer for a certain period. There are variants with higher returns based on secure funds that still guarantee a minimum return in case something goes wrong.

Stocks and funds: is certainly riskier compared to a savings account, but if purchases are made wisely, choosing, for example, stocks of solid companies that may pay dividends annually, these can yield several percentage points over the years. It’s definitely an option to consider for diversifying the various ways of saving.

Lending: is an investment system that is also emerging in Switzerland. Basically, there are companies that evaluate and issue loans for businesses and individuals, but at the same time, it’s the individuals and businesses that fund these loans, earning up to 10% of the amount invested in the loan (clearly depending on the risk taken).

Lifestyle change: when we are on the boat, we will inevitably have to change our lifestyle (unless we have a nice bank account), control costs, and avoid unnecessary expenses. Why not start right away? It’s very interesting to see how it’s easier to save than to find ways to earn more! And this without too many sacrifices…

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-2657041963581626"
     data-ad-slot="9874150793"
     data-ad-format="auto"></ins>

Personally, I started setting up a list of monthly expenses and, for example, I realized that:

I watch TV very little and can do without the Italian “trash” channels. I canceled the TV subscription, purchasing the satellite system with the RSI card (a one-time payment).

I can get the internet from my office downstairs, so I canceled the home connection.

the company “flat” mobile subscription allows me to use the phone privately as well, thus eliminating the private phone.

I pay some membership fees to associations I haven’t participated in for years, eliminated those too.

if I were to quit smoking, I would first gain in health, but I would also save a lot.

In short, if I just take these detailed points, we see that the savings are substantial:

TV and internet subscription: CHF 74.- x 12 = CHF 888.- / year

mobile phone: CHF 99.- x 12 = CHF 1,188.- / year

membership fees: CHF 300 / year

cigarettes: CHF 8.- x 365 days = CHF 2,920.- (minimum!)

With just these 4 points, I can save CHF 5,300.- a year!

Then there are those expenses resulting from impulsive purchases, often related to electronic “gadgets” that I love so much, but after a brief enthusiasm, they end up forgotten in some corner of the house collecting dust. Before buying something, I’ve made it a habit not to take it immediately and to reflect on whether there is a need, saving me money here too!
