Be prepared to walk for miles &#8211; I covered 120 kilometers in one week. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I must admit, from the very first evening <strong>Lisbon surprised and captivated me<\/strong>: for the local people, for the organization, for the cleanliness, for the architecture, and for the open spaces. It&#8217;s a human-scale city, where people get around on foot or by public transport and where it&#8217;s still a pleasure to stroll through its unchaotic streets, encountering many green spaces both in the center and along the banks of the Tagus. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To visit the city, you need to take your time &#8211; I&#8217;d say roughly one day per neighborhood. A week in Lisbon allows you to visit the main 5 neighborhoods and take the two day trips to Sintra and Cascais. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The neighborhoods of Lisbon that you absolutely must visit can be discovered using the <strong>famous tram 28<\/strong>, by metro, or even better on foot. I highly recommend wearing <strong>good hiking shoes<\/strong>, also because the <strong>limestone cal\u00e7ada<\/strong> used for the sidewalks is slippery, even more so when they start cleaning them with water cannons! \ud83d\ude48 <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_quartieri_lisboa.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2667 size-full\" title=\"Lisbon Neighborhoods to Visit\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_quartieri_lisboa.jpg\" alt=\"Lisbon Neighborhoods to Visit\" width=\"710\" height=\"393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_quartieri_lisboa.jpg 710w, https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_quartieri_lisboa-600x332.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_quartieri_lisboa-300x166.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 710px) 100vw, 710px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Bairro Alto Neighborhood<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Bairro Alto<\/strong> is Lisbon&#8217;s most creative and authentic neighborhood, where history, artists, galleries, and folklore are at home. During the day it&#8217;s quiet, but in the evening it comes alive and the nightlife becomes vibrant.<br \/>\nThere are two funiculars that lead to the neighborhood: the <strong>Elevador da Gl\u00f3ria<\/strong> north of Rossio station and the <strong>Ascensor da Bica<\/strong> right behind the Mercado da Ribeira Nova. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_funicolare.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2621 size-full\" title=\"Lisbon Neighborhoods to Visit\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_funicolare.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"710\" height=\"474\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_funicolare.jpg 710w, https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_funicolare-600x401.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_funicolare-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 710px) 100vw, 710px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t miss the panoramic viewpoint Miradouro de S\u00e3o Pedro de Alc\u00e2ntara, from where you can admire the Baixa neighborhood and the <a href=\"http:\/\/castelodesaojorge.pt\/it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Castelo de S. Jorge<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Baixa, Chiado and the Docks<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Symbol of the city&#8217;s rebirth, <strong>Baixa<\/strong> is a central neighborhood of Lisbon that extends from Rossio to the river, with elegant pedestrian streets and squares. Here you&#8217;ll find the major shops and during the day it&#8217;s among the busiest in the city. The neighborhood was rebuilt after the 18th-century earthquake by the Marquis of Pombal. Towards the Tagus River you&#8217;ll find <strong>Pra\u00e7a do Com\u00e9rcio<\/strong> and the <strong>Arco da Rua Augusta<\/strong>.   <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_placa_comercio.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2640 size-full\" title=\"Lisbon Neighborhoods to Visit\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_placa_comercio.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"710\" height=\"473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_placa_comercio.jpg 710w, https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_placa_comercio-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_placa_comercio-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 710px) 100vw, 710px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While wandering around Lisbon, you can&#8217;t help but taste <strong>Ginjinha<\/strong>, a sour cherry liqueur that&#8217;s sweet and spicy at the same time, typical of the area. You can taste it in various places, but the most characteristic and historic remains <strong>Ginjinha Espinheira,<\/strong> in Largo de S\u00e3o Domingos. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the Baixa neighborhood are hidden <strong>shops dating back to the early 1900s<\/strong> and even earlier, where these commercial establishments have preserved their original furnishings. Don&#8217;t miss <strong>Confeiteraria Nacional<\/strong>, a pastry shop active since 1829; <strong>Manuel Tavares<\/strong>, a grocery store founded in 1860; <strong>Retrosaria Bijou<\/strong>, a haberdashery opened in 1922; <strong>Luvaria Ulisses<\/strong>, a glove shop from 1925. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Chiado<\/strong> is a small traditional and characteristic neighborhood of Lisbon. Once a meeting place for writers and intellectuals, today it&#8217;s an elegant area where you can shop or have a drink in one of the many establishments. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Along <strong>the docks<\/strong>, the old port wharves on the Tagus, everything has been renovated. The former warehouses once used by importers of exotic goods have been converted into nightclubs, restaurants and trendy bars, as well as some design shops. Opposite <strong>Cais de Sodr\u00e9<\/strong> station, where bus, train, tram, metro and ferry lines meet, we find the <strong>Mercado da Ribeira<\/strong>, a renovated metal and glass structure that houses the wholesale food market and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeoutmarket.com\/lisboa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Time Out Market<\/a>, an area where you can find various restaurants, bars and shops. The first thing to visit is definitely the <a href=\"http:\/\/castelodesaojorge.pt\/it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Castelo de S. Jorge<\/a>, not so much for the structure, but rather for its position that dominates the city and thanks to which it offers an unmissable 360\u00b0 view. In one tower of the castle there&#8217;s the &#8220;<strong>camera obscura<\/strong>&#8220;, which I recommend going to see, even though you need to queue a bit.  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_periscopio.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2610 size-full\" title=\"Lisbon Neighborhoods to Visit\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_periscopio.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"710\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_periscopio.jpg 710w, https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_periscopio-600x393.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_periscopio-300x196.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_periscopio-214x140.jpg 214w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 710px) 100vw, 710px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To see the castle it&#8217;s better to arrive between 9:00 and 11:00, because when I left at noon there was a line at the ticket office of at least 30-45 minutes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the Alfama neighborhood you can find various interesting graffiti and see various buildings with the famous &#8220;<strong>azulejos<\/strong>&#8220;, the typical Portuguese ceramics, which became famous following the arrival of the Moors in the country.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_azulejos.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2611 size-full\" title=\"Lisbon Neighborhoods to Visit\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_azulejos.jpg\" alt=\"Lisbon Neighborhoods to Visit\" width=\"473\" height=\"710\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_azulejos.jpg 473w, https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_azulejos-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 473px) 100vw, 473px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>B\u00e9lem<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>B\u00e9lem<\/strong> neighborhood is far from the center, but still well connected <strong>by train and tram 15<\/strong>. Don&#8217;t go on Mondays, because several attractions are closed. Important expeditions that brought conquests to Portugal departed from this neighborhood and it therefore has a certain importance for the city. In B\u00e9lem there are 3 important points of interest: the <strong>Monasteiro dos Jer\u00f3nimos<\/strong>, the <strong>Torre de Bel\u00e9m<\/strong> and the <strong>Monument to the Discoveries<\/strong> dedicated to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/2018\/02\/20\/enrico-navigatore-lisbona-la-citta-dei-navigatori\/\">Henry and his navigators<\/a>. Another point of interest little mentioned in guides is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maat.pt\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maat<\/a>, the museum of art, architecture and technology. If these are subjects of interest, it&#8217;s worth entering and visiting both buildings.     <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Before returning to the center don&#8217;t forget to go and try the <strong>original<\/strong> &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/pasteisdebelem.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pastel de B\u00e9lem<\/a>&#8221; at the bakery of the same name.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_pastel_de_belem.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2618 size-full\" title=\"Lisbon Neighborhoods to Visit\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_pastel_de_belem.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"710\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_pastel_de_belem.jpg 710w, https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_pastel_de_belem-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.yamana.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/710_pastel_de_belem-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 710px) 100vw, 710px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Nations Park (Parque Das Na\u00e7\u00f5es)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>Nations Park<\/strong> is the neighborhood of modern Lisbon. Before its redevelopment, it was in a state of decay and abandonment: outdated industrial complexes, old military depots, a disused slaughterhouse and an open-air dump. Thanks to the fact that it was chosen for the 1998 International Exhibition (<strong>Expo &#8217;98<\/strong>), the area underwent major redevelopment and since then became part of the life of Lisbon&#8217;s inhabitants. Today this area is the most privileged and expensive to live in Lisbon.   <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It&#8217;s definitely worth taking a walk along the banks of the Tagus to admire <strong>the Vasco de Gama bridge<\/strong>, which at 17.2 km is the longest bridge in Europe. Nearby is <strong>the Vasco da Gama Tower<\/strong>, 140 meters high, designed as a panoramic tower, now converted into a luxury hotel. Both were built for Expo 98.  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Parque das Na\u00e7\u00f5es also preserves other buildings and former pavilions that were built specifically for the exhibition: from the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Altice_Arena\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pavilh\u00e3o Atlantico<\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oceanario.pt\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oceanario<\/a> (one of the largest and richest aquariums in the world), not forgetting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pavconhecimento.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pavilh\u00e3o do Conhecimento<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitlisboa.com\/see-do\/heritage-culture\/only-lisbon\/pavilhao-de-portugal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pavilh\u00e3o de Portugal<\/a>, designed by the famous Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza Vieira and the Pavilh\u00e3o do Futuro, now converted into a Casino.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The neighborhood is reachable via the red metro line that runs from S\u00e3o Sebasti\u00e3o to the airport.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For meat lovers, in the area I can recommend the <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/HBMoe5thgpH2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Butchers<\/a> restaurant, located right behind the Casino.<\/p>\n<table style=\"height: 139px;\" width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"100%\">\n<h2><strong>Tips<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"100%\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For staying overnight in Lisbon I find that the best way is to get an apartment through Airbnb.<br \/>\nI recommend those by Rui which are located in the central area of Lisbon, these are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airbnb.it\/s\/homes?host_id=2001523&amp;s_tag=sZkqrPXu&amp;allow_override%5B%5D=&amp;refinement_paths%5B%5D=%2Fhomes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">his apartments<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On this <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/kKhMfM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">map<\/a> you can see the most interesting points of interest, restaurants, and tourist attractions in Lisbon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To get around the city I used the metro and walked a lot on foot, which allowed me to discover hidden corners of the city. On the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metrolisboa.pt\/eng\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">metro website<\/a> you can find all the information regarding the various ticket offers. There are combined tickets for all public transport over several days.  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Throughout my stay in Lisbon I found <strong>only one negative note: the drug dealers<\/strong> present in neighborhoods heavily frequented by tourists like Chiado and Baixa, who even during the day continue to approach trying to sell any type of drug (and they don&#8217;t limit themselves to soft drugs); all this despite the strong police presence in the city streets.
